In the extremely fast growing arena of the recreational and medicinal cannabis industries, the design of cannabis dispensaries is often an afterthought. The McBride Company was contacted by one of the leading cannabis industry consultants to create a true branded retail experience that breaks the stereotypes of existing establishments associated with the cannabis industry.
The McBride Company wanted to make the store feel safe and comfortable, a departure from the ‘head shops’ often associated with cannabis retail, but also wanted to give a tip of the hat to the ‘stoner’ culture. One concept was the company’s ‘viewmaster wall’ where a psychedelic backdrop punctuates the embedded 3D view masters with slides highlighting the Pineapple Express story.
Continuing with our references to stoner culture, the McBride Company wanted to create a centerpiece, an iconic ‘face of the brand’. The company landed on the concept of an all-knowing Mystic Pineapple. The user asks the Pineapple which one of the store’s strains to purchase. The Pineapple then spits out a card with the user’s ‘spirit herb’.
Other ideas on how the Mystic Pineapple would interact with users were explored. One concept involved inspiration from the Tom Hank’s movie, Big, and presents the Mystic Pineapple as the all-knowing fortune telling machine, Zoltar Speaks.
